A friend came across this 1948 Olympic team (Irish rowing eight) training program. In sum it says:
 - eat three meals per day with lots of veg
 - avoid junk food snacks
 - do exercise
 - don’t smoke
 - don’t drink (other than a pint per day)

(He also says to eat a lot at meals, but that is because they were training for the Olympics.)
