Apologies for cross posting

You may be interested to know that the Paul Mellon Centre is putting on a display entitled: “The Inspection of the Curious” The Country House Guidebook c.1750-1990.

The “curious” visitors to country houses in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries were invariably armed with a guidebook; and it is a practice which still continues today. The Centre’s fourth Drawing Room Display, which is based on a selection of the Library’s considerable collection of guidebooks, examines how they have been used by their readers, and how we might deploy them as a source material in considering the country house and explores the history, context and characteristics of the genre.

The display is free and will run from 5th September – 6th January, in the Drawing Room of the Paul Mellon Centre, 16 Bedford Square, London, WC1B 3JA

We’d like to encourage all interested parties to come and view the display.
