Call for Papers *Knowledge mobility and co-production in the making of eco-cities in the global South* Association of American Geographers Annual Meeting, Boston, MA April 5-9, 2017 Organizers: Maggi Leung, (Utrecht University), I-Chun Catherine Chang (Macalester College) and Femke van Noorloos (Utrecht University) Making cities more sustainable is high on the global agenda. The widely anticipated 'New Urban Agenda' at the 'Habitat III' meeting of October 2016 will likely bolster the already burgeoning 'eco-city movement' worldwide, particularly in the global South. Underlying this key trend in urban development is its multifaceted interconnectedness. International policy and knowledge transfer have been critical to the development of eco-cities since the millennium, particularly through the work of international consultants, partnership with foreign governments, and references to leading international environmental organizations. These translocal collaborations involve mobility of policies, capital, people, materials, knowledge, imaginaries, discourses and practices, often travelling between the global North and South. However, the research on these translocal exchanges is still nascent. In this session, we would like to invite papers that advance our understanding of the translocal relationships in the making of eco-urbanism. We particularly welcome papers that a) critically engage with processes and mechanisms pivotal to the construction, mobility, mutation and translation of best practice models in a global North-South collaboration context; b) interrogate the flows and frictions of knowledge as well as related rationales, technologies, discourses, and practices in collaborative eco-city planning; and/or c) employ case-specific analysis on the potential and constraint of translocal partnerships in planning for sustainability. Abstracts may address, but are not limited to, the following questions: 1. What knowledge is exchanged, adapted and created in the co-production of eco-urbanism? 2. What are the patterns and mechanisms of knowledge mobility/production? Who are the key stakeholders? What are their roles? 3. How are various types of the knowledge accentuated, mutated, or translated to suit different implementation contexts? How do actors interact, compete and/or negotiate in the process? What are the power dynamics? 4. What are the results of knowledge mobility and production for eco-cities planning? How can we best evaluate their social, economic and ecological outcomes? 5. With the consideration of socio-cultural, ecological, institutional contexts in planning, what policy recommendations can we make to optimize the knowledge mobility and co-production of eco-city planning? Interested participants are invited to submit their paper title, abstract (no more than 250 words) and Presenter Identification Number (PIN) to the organizers Maggi Leung ([log in to unmask]), I-Chun Catherine Chang ( [log in to unmask]) and Femke van Noorloos ([log in to unmask]) by October 20, 2013. Authors need to submit paper abstract first through the AAG website to obtain the PIN.
