Social work supervision files are more about monitoring a individuals performance. So as a HR activity we keep them in line with the other staff which is Destroy  7 years after creation.

Note we have made it clear any information about the child/s are placed on the individual social care record.

Thanks

This is potentially a very tricky area, but must take into account the DPA and employment law, however the safeguarding requirements of the organisation complicate things too.

In general I think it should be date of termination + 6, but if there has been any reason for the employer to have questioned the social worker’s practice, or there have been any significant safeguarding issues then the records may be held until the social worker reaches retirement, or age 65, whichever is longer.

Just keeping all of these records longer than T+6 for no apparent reason is potentially a breach of DPA – as supervision records can include the names of details of 3rd parties (clients etc), and keeping them too long for not reason also affects the social worker’s rights in employment law.

This doesn’t always work for safeguarding purposes, where there is a desire to keep records to track trends or patterns of behaviour so there should be a review by IG, HR and social care management to establish the need for retention.

Subject: Social Work Supervision Files (Leavers)

Hello All

I have a query regarding the retention of Social worker supervision files for workers who have left the Authority.

Having checked the array of data sources on this one I get conflicting advice ranging from 7 to 25 years.

What is everyone else using??

Many Thanks

Leanne
