Press Officer - The Lancet

Description

 We are looking for an experienced and enthusiastic Press Officer to join The Lancet journals. Covering the weekly Lancet journal as well as 11 speciality journals, this is a busy role, where you will be involved in communicating important health research to international media. You will have a keen interest in science/health, excellent writing skills, and experience turning complex research into high quality, accurate press releases.  A third of our content is dedicated to global health, and with offices in New York and Beijing our reach is  international. You will assist with the day-to-day running of The Lancet journals' media relations activities,  including writing and distributing press releases, helping organise press conferences, major publication launch events, and dealing with enquiries from the media, authors and their institutions.  You will work with the Media Relations Manager to implement and plan a proactive media relations programme, in a period of expansion, as the number of new titles continue to increase. You will be a science graduate with some experience in a scientific media/communications role, you will have a keen interest in medical science, outstanding all-round communication skills, and an unflappable and organised approach to your work. This role may require occasional out of hours work. 

Main Activities and Responsibilities:
Media Relations
  • Helping identify research articles of interest to the media
  • Writing regular press releases on a range of medical and scientific topics ensuring accuracy and clarity
  • Acting as the first point of contact for journalists at The Lancet
  • Responding to requests from external press officers and providing an efficient service to support external press releases
  • Using social media to promote Lancet research
Office Administration
  • Distributing press releases to journalists
  • Maintaining The Lancet press contacts list
  • Maintaining The Lancet’s press schedule
Internal Strategy and Communications
  • Monitoring media coverage and producing coverage reports for editors and authors
  • Assisting in the development and implementation of The Lancet journals' media strategy as we move into a period of expansion.
  • Any other responsibilities that may be required as part of the role  
Skills/experience
  • Self starter with the ability to influence
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
  • Able to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines  
  • Diplomacy and the ability to remain calm under pressure   
  • Excellent organisation and co-ordination skills
  • Knowledge of quality/trends of the medical/science media and a genuine interest in health/science issues 
  • Team player whilst able to prioritise own work commitments including administrative tasks of the position. 
  • Degree (or equivalent) in a scientific/health field
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Proven interest/commitment in health/medical issues
  • Experience working in media relations within a health/science organisation
