Yes, it is worth it. Journalists are bombarded with directly emailed press releases, and, if time is tight, many if not most if these are deleted without being read.

Serious science journalists pay attention to daily email digests from the likes of AlphaGalileo, and generalist reporters tasked with producing science stories make use of the AG search facility.

If you publish your releases via Alpha Galileo, a respected news agency, the chances are that the titles and abstracts at least will be read. Ignore AG at your peril. For institutional subscribers, the cost is quite reasonable.

Never presume that your website is read by more than three old men and a dog, and the same goes for twitter.

Hi all,

I was wondering if the press officers on this list could share their opinions (or hard stats) on whether it is worth it to subscribe to science media services such as alpha galileo, idw or EurekAlert.

On alpha galileo, the standard subscription rate for an organisation to post news is €1870 per year, which is significant. Is this investment worth it? Do press releases reach a significantly higher audience if posted there (in comparison with only sending it to your media contacts, posting it on your website and sharing it on social media) or get significantly better coverage?

Sorry if this mailing list is not the right place to have this discussion. Feel free to reply to me only if you'd prefer to share your views off list.

Thanks,
Bárbara
