medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture In the context of the Vita Christi of Isabel of Villena, Judith is being praised as a model of a liberator of her people, just as Christ was the ultimate liberator in the Harrowing of Hell. I was interested to see if other medieval writers had a similar focus when it comes to Judith. I was not aware of the sources that you listed below, so I greatly appreciate your help! That's common in fifteenth-century Italian constructions of her. For some instances have a look at Jane Tylus' introduction to Lucrezia Tornabuoni's _Ystoria di Iudith vedova hebrea_ (ca. 1470) in her translation of Tornabuoni's _Sacred Narratives_ (Univ. of Chicago Press, 2001). It also seems to be common in modern scholars' analyses of the Old English _Judith_ (transmitted with _Beowulf_ in the Nowell Codex portion of BL, Cotton Vitellius A xv, though seemingly not in its present position via-a-vis _Beowulf_). Apropos Old English, you've probably already encountered Judith Kaup's _The Old English Judith: A Study of Poetic Style, Theological Tradition and Anglo-Saxon Christian Concepts_ (Mellen, 2013); since that began life relatively recently as an OE-focused dissertation (at Bonn), it might not offer much on later, Middle English constructions of the biblical Judith. But Judith Kaup is knowledgeable about these as well. You could ask her for for some pointers. I am working on Isabel of Villena's Vita Christi text from the late fifteenth century. In her presentation on the Harrowing of Hell, she provides her readers chapters on Judith and Esther from the Old Testament. My question concerns whether these two women appear in many other medieval texts and in what context? What I have found so far is that Judith is a model for modesty (pudicitia), chastity and humility. Esther is a model of intercession and her enthronement as queen was seen as a prefigurement of the coronation of the Virgin Mary. Is there anything more that is said about them in the middle ages?
