medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

The Cathedral in Lund is dedicated to St. Laurentius. One of the more fascinating images can be found in the astronomical clock preserved in the western aisle in the Cathedral. According to art historian Lone Mogensen the clock is divided into a heavenly upper part (macrocosmos) with a lower earthly part (microcosmos) divided by a small figure of Mary with Child. At the centre of the microcosmos is a figure of St. Laurentius.

A good danish presentation can be found here - http://www.apmollerfonde.dk/projekter/uret-i-lund.aspx (try google translate :-) A reasonably good photo can be found here: https://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lunds_domkyrka#/media/File:Lunds_astronomiska_ur-2.jpg

A (not very good) presentation on Youtube (Swedish) can be found here… https://youtu.be/euNVa5at_80

A photo of St. Laurentius may be found here..https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lunds_astronomiska_ur-1.jpg

Best,
Karen

I should have said for Poitiers Bay 101 that the glass is c.1170 with considerable recent restoration - according to Louis Grodecki 7 of the 21 panels are modern and there is retoration in a number of others.

Some glass images of St Laurence:

Deacon and martyr of Rome, died 258. Closely associated with Sixtus II, martyred  a few days before him under Valerian. Few detail are historical. The grid-iron motif probably came via a Phrygian source through the Acts of St Vincent of Saragossa.
