medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture Talking of St Lawrence I would be grateful if people comment on the following (and if you think it is rubbish, then so be it) Here at Bradford on Avon we have the Saxon Church of St Laurence (sic). After it was 'discovered' in the 19th century the local Vicar, William Henry Jones, found a reference in William of Malmesbury's works to an 'ecclesiola' built by St Aldhelm in the 7th century, and dedicated to St Laurence. Jones concluded that the Saxon church still standing was that building. The current thinking is that the building is 10th century and was built as a mausoleum for Edward King and Martyr. Recent building works at the neighbouring church of Holy Trinity have indicated that there is probably a Saxon church underneath that church. Two queries: 1) Should the 10th century Saxon building properly be dedicated to Edward King and Martyr, not St Laurence? 2) Which St Laurence was used for the 7th century church? St Laurence the deacon of Rome or St Laurence the second archbishop of Canterbury who beatified about the time St Aldhelm built his ecclesiola? Like St Lawrence, he was martyred by being roasted on a grill, but only after refusing to give up to the authorities the holy books in his keeping. The latter stipulation would explain the cupboard containing the four gospels in the mosaic, whereas there is nothing in the vita of St Lawrence that they relate to. > Cheers, > Jim > ________________________________________ > From: medieval-religion - Scholarly discussions of medieval religious > culture [[log in to unmask]] on behalf of Genevra > Kornbluth [[log in to unmask]] > Sent: August 10, 2016 10:25 AM > To: [log in to unmask] > Subject: Re: [M-R] FEAST - A Saint for the Day (August 10): St. > Lawrence of Rome > > medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and > culture > > I can add a page of Lawrence images (Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, > Louvre reliquary, Perugia fresco, Arca di Sant' Agostino, Arezzo > fresco, > Riemenschneider): > www.kornbluthphoto.com/SaintLawrence.html > I notice that John has not included the Mausoleum in his list.
