Dear colleagues,

At Newcastle University we are offering a funded PhD in Constructions and uses of the European past in heritage and political discourse.

Interested in connections between memory, heritage and identity in Europe? This project examines how and why particular historical moments are mythologised for symbolic effect in official and non-official heritage practice and in political discourse. You will explore this over a variety of cultural forms, including social media, connecting uses of the past to contemporary discourses of European and anti-European identities. The full advert can be found here: http://www.ncl.ac.uk/postgraduate/funding/sources/allstudents/mch17.html

A 'Further Details' document (which is essential reading for applicants) is available here: http://www.ncl.ac.uk/sacs/mch/postgraduate/research/documents/REAScholarship.pdf

The PhD project is interdisciplinary (heritage studies, memory studies, museum studies, politics, digital culture, media and cultural studies) with a supervisory team to match. We do not expect candidates to come with readymade expertise in all of these areas and training opportunities are built into the award. The project will benefit from and complement a major EU-funded award led by the primary supervisor: Critical Heritages: performing and representing identities in Europe (CoHERE).<http://research.ncl.ac.uk/cohere/>

Best wishes

Darren
