An Invitation to Day Conference

Shared Solidarities II: Political Activism and Community Media Sheffield Hallam University: Thursday, 8 September 2016, 9.30-4.30pm.

This conference is hosted jointly by MeCCSA Social Movements Network, the Radio Network and The Culture Communication and Computing Institute at Sheffield Hallam University.

The venue is the university's central city site, five minutes from the station. It is free and all are welcome. We are providing lunch and refreshments, so everyone who wishes to attend is asked to register beforehand through the link below.

Shared Solidarities II is a follow-up to the successful first event in 2015. The aim of this year's conference is to consider the relationship between community media and local political activism: what they have in common and how they work together.

Political activism has usually involved the adoption and adaptation of whatever media are available at the time. Community media are linked to many groups' and communities' struggle for equality and social justice. Unesco's definition of community media is that they provide an alternative to 'public and commercial media' and 'are characterized by their accountability to the communities they serve'.

Shared Solidarities ll will be organised around three key strands:

· Community media histories
· Community media case studies
· Lessons for political activism

Topics will include: history of local community media in Bristol; transnational radio and women's resistance; digital networks and local activism. Invited speakers are representatives from community media organisations, academic researchers of radio and printed community media and of the new digitally-led organisations and graphic designers for NGOs and activist campaigns.

Please register by Monday, 5 September 2016 for room accommodation and catering purposes.
