Details:

Christopher Strachey was born almost exactly 100 years ago. In this talk, Joe will discuss his contribution to "Computation", as it began to evolve during his lifetime, cut tragically short in 1975. In particular, Joe will talk about the last decade of his life, at the Programming Research Group at Oxford, where Joe was his junior colleague. By his own work on formal semantics, and the encouragement of others, he was one of the first people to insist on the idea that computing had formal aspects, even though he was not yet comfortable with calling it a science.
