CALL FOR PAPERS

Global Displacement & the Politics ofEngagementMay 15-18, 2017
Centre forAsia-Pacific Initiatives, University of Victoria10th Annual Conference of theCanadian Association for Refugee and Forced Migration StudiesForgotten CorridorsNever before in modern history have so many peoplebeen forced to leave their homes and journey abroad for temporary or permanentsettlement. According to the UNHCR June 2015 report,“by the end of 2015, 65.3million individuals were forcibly displaced worldwide as a result ofpersecution, conflict, generalized violence or human rights violations.”Much attention in the west has been directed at thesteady flow of refugees leaving war-torn countries to end up on the shores ofthe Mediterranean. However, many of the displaced remain neglected orforgotten; travelling little watched corridors en route to temporarydestinations in detention centers, refugee camps, or makeshift housing. Thesehierarchies of human mobility hide the precarious nature of the lives ofmillions of migrants, demanding attention and engagement to make meaningfultransformations. The Centre for Asia-Pacific Initiatives at theUniversity of Victoria (www.uvic. ca/capi) willhost the tenth annual CARFMS conference from May 15th to 18th, 2017 inbeautiful Victoria, BC. CARFMS17 will invite researchers, policy makers andactivists from diverse disciplines and regions to discuss the parameters ofglobal displacement, especially the experiences of those taking routes lesstraveled.
