Lund University, Faculty of Science, Department of Biology

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is regularly ranked as one of the world’s top 100 higher education institutions. The University has 41 000 students and 7 500 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

The Faculty of Science conducts research and education within Biology, Astronomy, Physics, Geosciences, Chemistry, Mathematics and Environmental Sciences. The Faculty is organized into ten departments, gathered in the northern campus area. The Faculty has approximately 1900 students, 330 PhD students and 700 employees.

Lunds Protein Production Platform (LP3, www.lu.se/lp3) is a centre of Lund University that hosts equipment and expertise for the production, purification, characterization and crystallisation of proteins. LP3 is a service unit offering high quality protein production and crystallization for use in biological, medical and technological research. LP3 is located in the biology house in the northern campus area and close to the rich research environment offered by the faculties of science, medicine and technology. It is also close to the world unique research infrastructures MAX IV and ESS.

Job description
You will have an important role in LP3, with special responsibility for protein crystallization and characterization. This includes operation and maintenance of equipment, project planning, contact with clients and users as well as administration. You will work experimentally on a project basis; communicate continually with clients and users, research collaborators as well as your LP3 colleagues. An ability to work independently and to drive projects forward is expected. Laboratory tasks include:

  • Analysis and quality control of protein samples before crystallisation trials
  • Production and crystallization of proteins as well as the study of their basic physical, chemical and functional properties
  • To perform basic protein analysis techniques (for example SDS-PAGE, UV/Vis spectrometry, masspectrometry, immuno-blotting)
  • Protein purification in several steps of tagged and non-tagged recombinant proteins for structure and/or functional studies
  • Operation and maintenance of equipment for crystallisation
  • Analysis, documentation and presentation/reporting of experimental data
  • Hands-on supervision of visiting guest researchers in the laboratory
  • Continuous communication and dialogue with clients and users
  • To keep up a state of the art knowledge and current literature knowledge to adapt and/or develop new structural methods and experiment designs

Specific tasks will include:

  • Operation and maintenance of Rigaku Minstrel HTUV and Gallery 700.
