The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the
highest ranked scientific research organisations in the world.
The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany),
with additional sites in Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany),
Hinxton (UK) and Monterotondo (Italy).
We wish to recruit an experienced and motivated scientist to
join a team to establish and run a state-of-the-art cryo-EM
facility for structural biology on the European Photon and
Neutron (EPN) Campus in Grenoble. This is a Partnership for
Structural Biology (PSB) project together with the European
Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) and Institut de Biologie
Structurale (IBS) and involves installation of a Titan Krios
with K2 detector within the ESRF. This instrument, complemented
by other electron microscopes on campus (e.g. Polar/K2 and F20
at IBS, T12 at EMBL), will be open for external user access
mainly for high resolution data collection for 3D single
particle reconstruction. The tasks of the successful candidate
will be to
- participate in installation, commissioning and running of the
ESRF cryo-EM facility
- help users in data collection and preliminary data analysis
- keep up-to-date processing software and hardware in
collaboration with local IT staff
- implement or develop novel methods in cryo-EM (e.g. automation
of sample handling) in collaboration with local engineers
- co-organise practical training in cryo-EM for internal and
external users.
- contribute expertise to in house structural biology research
projects in collaboration with EMBL Grenoble group leaders.
- liase with the electron microscopists at EMBL Heidelberg and
Hamburg.
Applicants should have the following qualifications
- PhD degree in the physical or biological sciences
- Several years demonstrable experience in cryo-electron
microscopy (including sample handling, data collection and image
processing) as applied to structural biology
- Ability and desire to provide a high quality service to users
- Ability and desire to work in a collaborative international
research environment together with scientists from collaborating
EPN Campus institutes
- Good communication skills in English
EMBL is an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering
attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to an
international research organisation with a very collaborative
and family friendly atmosphere. We strongly encourage
applications from female candidates with the relevant
qualifications. The working language of the institute is
English.
