Panel Title: 'The Governance of Global Finance'

Abstract:

In the aftermath of the 2007-2008 global financial crisis, a forceful message has reverberated across the global political economy highlighting that the current arrangements for the governance of global finance are highly flawed. This indicates that an alternative path needs to be taken when considering the way global finance is conducted as well as regulated. The globalisation of financial markets has led the global economy to be far more interconnected and integrated than at any other time witnessed throughout history. However, the institutions as well as the rules that manage and regulate global finance have not proceeded at the same pace. In other words, at the international level a regulatory framework has fallen far short of what is required for our globalised world. Although discussions surrounding reform have been ongoing within the G20, the EU, the USA and elsewhere, the regulatory outcomes that emerge (or will soon) still produce fragmentation and adoption remains optional. Compounding this is the fact that there is little consensus on how the governance of global finance should be undertaken and whether current regulatory reforms amount to too much, too little or are completely in the wrong direction. This panel invites papers from PhD students that seek to investigate the broad benefits and problems that are related to both existing as well as proposed regulatory measures and policies - from the national arena to the global level – which are associated with the governance of global finance. These can include, but are not limited to, topics such as institutional reform, financial speculation, regulatory capture, systemic risk and an inclusionary approach to rule setting.
