Hello Hannah,

I would say it definitely looks like some sort of horned ruminant. Maybe some sort of mountain goat or in terms of the scale of the 'horns' this picture of scimitar oryx (scroll to about half way down) or something similar may be a possibility:

Is the pottery native or imported? I guess its origin may give clues as to the range of species that may be depicted?

I wondered if anyone could offer opinions on the identification of this 'creature' depicted on a Roman pottery fragment recovered during excavations at Saighton Camp near Chester?

We initially thought insect, but have now considered some sort of deer/antelope type animal.
