medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture It's pretty well-established. Carries the implication that whoever is being "presentist" sees the world from an almost solely contemporary perspective -- I encounter it often, for instance, in reading the Rule of St Benedict and seeing students outraged over the fact that Benedict can think it perfectly reasonable to beat boys who fail in some respect, something that would never enter my head as someone raised in the 70s. Also of course in teaching women's history one endlessly encounters outrage at the limited choices and power available to women. The theme is always: what we do now is the best, and if it hasn't always been this way it should have been. For a Brit teaching in the US, presentist attitudes are complicated by the "what America does is best" syndrome.

In relation to teaching undergraduates these days, I'm intrigued by your use of the word "presentist".  Did you coin the concept, or is it more established?  Either way, it would be very useful to have more perspective on it, as it seems to correspond to a fairly widespread problem in teaching the Middle Ages in the early 21st century.
Cheers,
Jim

I would nominate Chadwick's translation (Oxford) as one of the best. I teach Confessions every semester in a sophomore seminar required of all university students (all majors) here at SHU and his version has been the most successful with students (most of them typically presentist, pragmatic and professionally-oriented American young adults).

Is there a 'best', readable version of Augustine's Confessions that anyone would recommend?  I'm considering buying one for my son, a philosophy graduate who professes only to be interested in modern philosophy.

Thank you,
Rosemary
