Joachim and Anne, parents of the Lord medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture In the Roman Calendar and in the sanctoral calendars of other churches, 26. July is the feast of Sts. Joachim and Anne / Anna, parents of the BVM, whose names first occur in early Christian tradition (imprimis the _Protoevangelium Jacobi_). But early tradition is not necessarily authentic and the Episcopal Church in the United States of America instead commemorates on this day "The Parents of the Blessed Virgin (traditionally identified as Anne and Joachim)". In the Roman Calendar prior to its reform as promulgated in 1968 Joachim had a feast of his own on 16 August, the day immediately following that of the Assumption of the BVM; even earlier (but still in the early modern period), his feast fell on the Sunday within the octave of the Assumption of the BVM (so the Roman Martyrology in its revision of 1748, noting, as did its successors through 1962, that Joachim's own _dies natalis_ was 20. March). Cardinal Baronio's late sixteenth-century editions of the Roman Martyrology commemorated Joachim on 10. March. In the medieval Latin West 26. July was ordinarily the feast day of St. Anne. In Byzantine-rite churches Joachim and Anne have traditionally been celebrated on 9. September (so e.g. the Synaxary of Constantinople), with a separate feast of the Dormition of Anne occurring on 24. or 25. July. The earlier ninth-century Marble Calendar of Naples records both of these latter feasts, with Anne sharing 25. July with St. Eupraxia / Euphrasia (as she still does in Orthodox and other Byzantine-rite churches).
