Hi Rachel, It sounds like you are just displaying all of the lidar points rather than the hill-shade (or whatever processing you are wanting). If you zoom right in you will see the points (the asc file is usually just 3 columns - easting, northing and height). You need to create a raster version and then do your hill shading etc. The fun part, if your pcs are anything like ours, is finding one that doesn't take hours to process each tile.
