Hello Sabina,

Holdings of Vesuvius/Somma/Campi Flegrei material at the Oxford University Museum of Natural History include:

* Around 200 rock samples from Vesuvius/Somma/Campi Flegrei in the collection of Charles Giles Bridle Daubeny (1795-1867) author of 'A description of active and extinct volcanoes...' (1826). Many have detailed localities.

* 500+ other historic rock specimens (18th & 19th century), including samples purchased by John Phillips, specimens given to William Buckland by geologist Ashurst Majendie, some labelled as from Lord Northampton, and samples bought from Krantz of Bonn and Launoy et soeur . Many of the specimens have details of locality and which eruption.

* There are 26 polished stone samples in the Corsi Collection, given to the University in 1827. You can see them here: www.oum.ox.ac.uk/corsi<http://www.oum.ox.ac.uk/corsi> if you search for 'Vesuvius'.

* Around 30 samples collected by Lawrence R. Wager, Marc Vuagnat and Marcel Burni in 1959.

* 422 specimens in our mineral collection, derived from various collections, mainly 19th/early 20th century. You can find out more by searching the online mineral database: http://www.oum.ox.ac.uk/collections.

Do get back in touch if you want to know more or come and see -and the same applies to anyone else seeing the GCG message board.
