Internship in UNHCR livelihood project in Burkina Faso with Malian refugee artisans

The UNHCR livelihood unit of Burkina Faso is currently running a project with Malian refugee artisans who belong to the Tuareg community. The aim of the project is to bring their unique hand-made products to international markets. Previous contacts with potential clients/retailers have shown that the project is promising to contribute to a sustainable improvement of the refugee artisans’ livelihoods.

However, UNHCR and project partners have noticed challenges regarding the artisans’ behaviour towards markets, which is highly influenced by values and norms of the Tuareg culture. In order to raise awareness among the artisans of the constraints that may arise due to this behaviour (concerning e.g. quality consistency, order deadlines, working efficiently as a group, price fixation), UNHCR is about to create 9 Behavioral Change Sessions, with planned implementation starting in August 2016.

The UNHCR livelihoods unit is now looking for a person interested in preparing and implementing the 9 Behavioral Change Sessions. They are taking place in Burkina Faso (Ouagadougou and two refugee camps in the Sahel).

Key responsibilities

- preparation of the 9 Behavioral Change Sessions on the basis of a guidebook; this includes to organize the production of tools for the Sessions (for example image cards/photos/short films)

- implementation of the 9 Behavioral Change Sessions in Ouagadougou and two refugee camps in the Sahel

- collaboration with UNHCR livelihoods unit and external anthropologist

Requirements

- experience in facilitating group discussions/workshops with illiterate rural communities (including use of visual tools); experience in organizing Behavioral Change Sessions is NOT required

- have an eye for design and understanding requirements of international mid-luxury markets (including standards in design, quality, consistency)

- dynamic personality

- available from August to December 2016 (if earlier start possible that would be an advantage)

- French language skills

- ready to cover costs for visa/flight/stay (unpaid internship)
