CONTAMINATED-LAND-STRATEGIES Digest - 27 Jun 2016 to 28 Jun 2016 (#2016-103)

The attached photograph is a Webb’s Sewer destructor lamp, similar to that described by Stuart. They had a dual purpose, providing street lighting from burning gas, but would also burn any gas vented from the sewer to prevent explosions in the sewer network. The attached photograph is from Ripon, but Sheffield has quite a few of these too. There are a few thousand gas lamps in the UK still in operation, mainly in London, but some in towns (e.g. Malvern). Most surviving lampposts have been converted to electric.

Best Regards

All

In some areas the sewers are vented to prevent gas build up. I have noted this specifically in Merseyside where some rather ornate lamp post like open topped vents exist.

Hi Helen

Your desktop study may reveal an historic source which explains the presence of the vent.

You might try a local Authority Enquiry relating to petroleum licencing records relating to the site and any associated maps/plans. Standard searches do not cover this sort of thing.

You could also take a look at any Planning records and/or Building Control records – design and detailed design drawings relating to the site.

Tenant/anecdotal enquiries are useful but be mindful of the uncertainty associated with this approach.

Kind regards

Ruth

Subject: Unknown Pipe

Hi All

I visited a storage distribution warehouse last week and a pipe was noted in the corner of the car park adjacent to the road. We are currently awaiting drainage plans etc but enquiries with the tenant indicated that there were no underground tanks or interceptors on site. There were no manholes covers or drainage nearby.

Has anyone come across anything similar elsewhere or know what it is?

Many thanks

Helen
