Short courses in Ecological Survey Techniques at the University of Oxford (September – December 2016)

Applications are now open for the following short courses in ecological survey techniques, multivariate statistics and data analysis:

Field Techniques for Surveying Vegetation (21 September – 26 October 2016)

This 5 week part-time online course enables students to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to conduct effective vegetation surveys and to choose the correct sampling strategies. Taught by Dr Jocelyne Hughes, the course offers expert practical training for conservationists working in a diversity of habitats and biomes.

Data Analysis in Ecology: Statistics for Ecologists and Field Biologists (2 November – 7 December 2016)

This tutor-led ecological statistics course provides a thorough introduction to the key statistical principles and methods used by ecologists and field biologists. It will appeal to a variety of practitioners in environmental science and management who want to improve their ability to display ecological data, and to use descriptive and inferential statistics to analyse the results from field surveys.

The course introduces students to the use of the following software: QED statistics and R.

As part-time online courses, Field Techniques for Surveying Vegetation and Data Analysis in Ecology are ideal for professional ecological consultants, environmental managers and rangers, research and postgraduate students, and volunteers that are seeking flexible study combined with expert training. The courses can be taken from anywhere in the world and is international in its use of case studies and examples.

Accredited and non-accredited study options available as well as a discounted student rate.

Full details on the range of short courses available can be found at www.conted.ox.ac.uk/about/ecological-survey-techniques.

Multivariate Ecological Statistics (7 – 10 November 2016)

This four-day training workshop in Multivariate Statistics (theory and practice) provides an integrated programme of statistical approaches for research in ecology, field biology, environmental science and management. The sessions provide an essential learning for those needing a skillset of statistical approaches required for research, or professional and industry-based projects. Delegates will be introduced to skills in experimental design, sampling strategies and data analysis that are essential to the setting up and evaluation of field experiments, landscape scale studies, research into ecosystem services and processes, and assessing the impacts of environmental change or management on biodiversity.
