University of Leicester, UK
Ref: MBP01621
Salary Grade 6 - £26,537 to £30,738 per annum
Fixed Term Contract for up to 2 years
These 2 two-year full time posts offer the opportunity for graduates in mathematics, statistics or another relevant quantitative subject to undertake a research methods training fellowship, funded by the National Institute for Health Research
(NIHR). They provide an excellent opportunity to receive high quality structured training in medical statistics (and health-related research and research methods generally) within a supportive and dynamic research and teaching environment. The first year of
the roles will involve undertaking the long-established and highly regarded MSc in Medical Statistics run within the Department of Health Sciences (starting on the 26th September, 2016).
ROLE:
The fellows will undertake the MSc in Medical Statistics at the Department of Health Sciences, University of Leicester on a full-time basis during the first year.
In the second year the fellows will undertake a project either with the Genetic Epidemiology research group or with the Biostatistics research group. The Genetic Epidemiology project involves the development of an understanding of methods
for disentangling causation from association in observational data and undertaking analyses using these approaches. The fellow will also undertake independent research under direct supervision and guidance that contributes to new intellectual understanding,
especially with application to observational cohort data on asthma and COPD. The aims of the Biostatistics project are similar but, in this case, the methods development, analyses and supervised research will be in the area of the synthesis of effectiveness
evidence used to inform appraisals of public health interventions.
The fellows will also have the opportunity to develop a PhD proposal to submit for further Fellowship funding, and will each supervise a 3-month NIHR Research Methods Internship.
REQUIREMENTS:
You will have an honours degree (2.1 or higher) with a substantial mathematics or statistics content.
