If I remember correctly it was Casualty that had a storyline that actually involved the guy from the Pathology lab - he seemed to work alone, with a microscope and coloured lighting in his cave-like laboratory. But he could diagnose a rare infection - at the bedside (confirmed under the microscope). Clearly someone has advised the government of this, hence their expectation to make massive savings once they understand which sort of microscope it is and what colour the lighting should be exactly. One of my guilty pleasures is to watch a bit of Holby City, where biochemistry often gets mentioned. They have a remarkable lab in many ways - they can test any substance for anything at all and get an answer within a few hours, although the Doctors and Nurses often declare that they are "backed up" a lot and therefore the lab gets a lot of flak. The main downside of the holby hospital pathology is that whenever someone has a suspected heart attack a doctor immediately orders a cardiac enzymes test. I look forward to the day that they embrace the new millennium and get themselves a troponin assay.
