9 Panels | Comic Industry Conference
9 Panels
[9panels.jpg]
For the first time ever, Glasgow Comic Festival is proud to present 9 Panels, a brand new industry day. The full-day conference, limited to 120 places, is ideal for students, amateurs and semi-pros and will include talks and workshops from the likes of Kate Leth, Marguerite Bennett and Rachael Stott. You’ll have the opportunity to show off your portfolio and pitch to the Beano and BHP Comics, before rounding the day off with a symposium discussing The National Centre for Comics. Not to mention a talk with two very special guests.

Introduction by Sha Nazir
10:25am
Festival director Sha Nazir welcomes delegates ahead of Glasgow Comic Festival’s first ever 9 Nine Panels. Aside from his festival duties, Sha runs BHP Comics and is the artist behind the Laptop Guy series.
Keynote by Professor Laurence Grove
10:45am
The University of Glasgow’s Professor Laurence Grove joins us to give a fascinating insight into the world’s first comic The Glasgow Looking Glass and how it provided the framework for exciting exhibition Comic Invention, which is currently running at the Hunterian Art Gallery.
Writers workshop with Kate Leth and Marguerite Bennett
11:30pm – 12:30pm
Gain an insight into the creative process from two creators who know a thing or two about comic writing, from their own work to handling some of Marvel and DC’s biggest properties.
Digital drawing workshop with Rachael Stott
1:30pm -2:30pm
IDW artist Rachael Stott, perhaps best recognised for her work on Star Trek and Doctor Who, takes you step-by-step through digital drawing. Perfect for those struggling to ditch paper and inks.
Portfolio reviews and pitching with the Beano and BHP Comics
2:45pm – 3:45pm
Ever fancied yourself working for publishing powerhouse DC Thomson? Beano editors and creators will be scouting talent and you’ll have the chance to put your work infront of them. Plus BHP Comics will be reopening their submissions especially for the event – so get those pitches ready!
SICBA Issue Two symposium
3:45pm-5:00pm
How far away is a National Centre for Comics in Glasgow really? Following on from 2014’s Issue One, we invite a panel of industry experts to talk about the future of comics and the steps we have to take to get there.
Frank Quitely goes cover to cover with David Aja and Hawkeye
8pm – 9pm
Headlining 9 Panels are two established artists in the comics world. Focusing on the (slightly unconventional) Marvel hit Hawkeye, festival patron Frank Quitely sits down with David Aja, quizzing him artist to artist about the creative process behind the much-lauded series. From tackling stories through canine eyes to abandoning dialogue entirely as Clint Barton goes deaf, whether you’re a budding artist or just a big fan of Pizza Dog, this talk is not to be missed.
Included in Nine Panels ticket or ticket for talk only: £8/£5
