Dear colleague,

This is to invite you to the following event: Workshop on ‘Population change and geographic inequalities in the UK, 1971-2011’ (PopChange), Thursday 14th July, University of Liverpool.

The workshop will introduce a population grid square resource which enables the analysis of population change for small areas of the UK between 1971 and 2011. The resource comprises an extensive set of counts on a 1km grid which can be used to explore, for example, changes in the demographic profiles of small areas, area deprivation, country of birth, and many other aspects of population change. The event comprises two parts: (i) an outline of the contents of the resource and (ii) a structured introduction to the online resource and its use. The second part of the event includes a guided exercise which will demonstrate how to download selected grid data for a local authority of choice, followed by some basic analyses using the QGIS software package.

The workshop is likely to be of interest to researchers in national and local government departments, NGOs, and in academia, and any others interested in population change over small areas of the UK in the last 40 years. The project team from the University of Liverpool and the Office for National Statistics will be present to answer questions on particular facets of the resource. The PopChange project website provides more information: https://www.liverpool.ac.uk/geography-and-planning/research/popchange/introduction/

The timing of the event is as follows: 12.00-13.00 lunch (free) and registration; workshop: 13.00-16.00

The event is free but is capped to 50 participants and registration is essential. Please register here: http://payments.liv.ac.uk/browse/extra_info.asp?compid=1&modid=2&deptid=38&catid=38&prodid=1489. More information will be sent to registrants in due course.

The project of which this resource is part is funded by an Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Secondary Data Analysis Initiative Phase 2 Grant.
