Summary:
In partnership with and part-funded by the Korea Foundation, the University of Sheffield Library is undertaking a retrospective cataloguing project to upgrade the metadata for the older books in its Korean collection. The project will run for the fixed term of one year, during which time 10,590 catalogue records will be checked and upgraded to current standards, including Korean language access points. The aim is to increase the discoverability of this important Korean language collection.
The Library’s Metadata and Discovery Section manages the digital library and supports discovery and access to the Library’s resources, through the resource discovery system, bibliographic database and external sources via the Internet.
Reporting to the Metadata Manager and working closely with colleagues who lead on East Asian Studies in the Faculty Engagement Team, you will be responsible for checking, editing and upgrading MARC records for Korean language materials in the Library’s Alma database. You will select records from external sources, e.g. union catalogues, where available, or create high quality metadata in MARC that conforms to current international standards. You will ensure that the materials can be searched in their original language in the Library’s resource discovery layer, StarPlus. Statistics of numbers of records
upgraded will be kept and reported to the project group on a monthly basis so that project progress can be monitored.
You should be educated to GCSE level or have equivalent experience and be fluent in written and spoken Korean language. Professional information skills, including the ability to undertake searches of bibliographic databases and the developing range of scholarly sources on the internet, are also essential to this role.
