Convoy to Calais – Saturday 18 June 2016
Register at www.convoytocalais.org

The
humanitarian crisis spreading from north Africa and the middle east is
beyond desperate. Last weekend over 700 refugees drowned in the
Mediterranean. Hundreds of thousands of people are still fleeing war and
persecution with tens of thousands of children stranded from their
parents or missing altogether.

The
refugees welcome movement in Britain is playing a crucial role in
putting pressure on the government to accept refugees, and we must keep
that pressure up. The Convoy to Calais on the 18th of June is both an
expression of solidarity with refugees in the Calais camps and a message
that Britain must do more to provide refuge for some of the most
vulnerable people in Europe.

Here’s what you can do to get involved:

Come on the Convoy.
We need every last lorry,
van, bus, car, motorbike or scooter that can
come to be with us. Let us
know you’re coming by registering, and do
make a donation to help with
the costs. Even if you have to peel off at
Dover and cant make it all
the way.

Collect.
We need material, and money. Collect
in your workplace, union,
community, place of worship or just among your
friends. Every bit
counts.

Even if you haven’t collected anything do come on the Convoy. We need hands to unload and a massive show of solidarity.

A month before Britain goes to the polls for the EU Referendum, around 200 people packed the NUT’s Mander hall to send a powerful message that Britain must play it’s role in providing sanctuary for those fleeing war, and that refugees and migrants must not be the target of scapegoating in the referendum campaign.

First to speak was Alf Dubs, the Labour peer leading the campaign in Parliament to force the government to accept child refugees. He said that public support had been crucial in getting the government to make a U-turn on his amendment, and that we must get rid of the stigma of being a refugee...
