Higher Statistical Officer at HSL, Buxton, UK

HSE is currently looking for a Higher Statistical Officer to work at HSL, which is HSE’s internationally recognised research laboratory in Buxton. Working in a wide range of multi-disciplinary teams, the focus of the research is on contributing directly to improving the lives of working people. This is an excellent opportunity for a Higher Statistical Officer with good statistical skills to join a well-established team of statisticians and epidemiologists.

You can expect to work on a diverse portfolio of projects within the occupational health and safety sector, and to be involved in all stages of statistical and epidemiological projects. Currently these projects include long-term occupational cohort studies of professional pesticide users and of asbestos removal workers; intervention studies in the stone working, brick making, foundry and wood working industries; statistical modelling of future health outcomes; and modelling the ageing of reactor cores and associated safety implications for nuclear power stations. You can expect to use a wide range of analytical methods during the course of your work, and to collaborate with technical specialists across many disciplines.

Your responsibilities will include:
	Providing bespoke statistical analysis and modelling solutions, using statistical software such as Stata, SPSS, R, MATLAB, or similar languages 
	Working flexibly across the portfolio of research
	Working collaboratively across HSE and with external experts
	Providing statistical support to colleagues
	Assisting with the preparation of proposals for research and support work within HSE and for external customers
	Writing scientific reports, peer-reviewed papers and presenting research at conferences and seminars
	Publicising and promoting the work of the team and helping to increase the customer base
	Contributing to the growth of non-HSE business by generating new ideas for offerings and potential clients.

Qualifications
Essential:
	Good honours degree in a numerate subject, 2.1 or above
	A post-graduate qualification in statistics or epidemiology, or equivalent experience

	Provision of data fit for purpose - Can critically assess the quality and validity of data and their sources
	Data analysis - Has experience of two or more of the following: linear models, generalised linear models, multilevel modelling, longitudinal data, time series, survival analysis, multivariate analysis, Monte Carlo methods, survey design, experimental design
	Explaining statistical concepts and findings - Can present own work to a wide range of people
