JOURNAL OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL SCIENCE REPORTS: SPECIAL ISSUE
Theme: Seasonal
palaeoenvironmental records from archaeological sites
Guest editors: Amy Prendergast, Alex Pryor, Hazel Reade & Rhiannon Stevens
We invite manuscript submissions for a thematic edition of Journal of Archaeological Science: Reports, entitled Seasonal palaeoenvironmental records from archaeological sites.
Climate seasonality significantly influences mean climate and plays a critical role in the interplay between
humans and their environment. Seasonal changes can affect the availability of food, water, shelter and raw materials. Therefore, robust assessments of
relationships between climate change and changes in human behaviour require an understanding of climate and environment at a seasonal resolution. In recent years, many advances have been made in obtaining seasonally-resolved palaeoenvironmental data from proxy
records. If these proxy records are obtained from archaeological sites, they offer a unique opportunity to reconstruct local climate variations that can be spatially and temporally related to human activity.
This special issue will focus on the potential for generating seasonal-resolution palaeoenvironmental records from archaeological sites as a means
to assessing human-environment interaction. We welcome contributions from all regions of the world and across all time periods. We invite contributions including, but
not limited to,palaeoenvironmental
reconstructions from biogenic carbonates accumulated in archaeological deposits as a result of hunting and foraging activities, such as mollusc shells, otoliths and faunal teeth; studies of macrobotanical and pollen remains from archaeological sites that
offer insights into seasonal temperature or precipitation variations and the length of growing seasons; and zooarchaeological research that offers insights into seasonal site use and palaeoenvironments.
