Description:

As a new mom, life is so busy caring for baby that it can be difficult to find the time for introspection. This workshop focuses on how to make the most of two daily activities that keep moms occupied: walking and feeding/eating. Participants will be guided through a process of bringing mindfulness to these activities. Through a series of six workshops, participants will learn to approach walking and eating with baby as opportunities for inspiration and empowerment. Each session will begin with a 30-45 minute talk and guided discussion in a café, followed by a 45-minute to 1-hour walk. An optional reading will be circulated in advance of each meeting, and will inform that week’s discussion and walking path.

Approach:

Moms face a barrage of advice, from apps and websites, books and television about everything from feeding and sleeping to diapering and traveling. The purpose of this workshop is not to offer more advice about what to do or not to do with baby. Rather, it is a space in which to reflect upon the deeper meaning of the everyday choices we make in caring for our babies. This is a respectful and non-judgmental space in which differences are appreciated.

Workshop Facilitator:

Dr. Natalie Doonan is a mom of a five-month old, a recent PhD graduate, an artist, writer and educator. Her areas of specialization are: sensory studies, multimedia art, cultural geography and performance studies. She is also founder and director of the SensoriuM, a series of artist-led tours and tastings in and around Montreal.
