We invite applications for a four-year Ph.D. studentship to start in October 2016 to work with Professor Julia Bennell and Dr Jonathan Klein. The project is an EPSRC Industrial CASE collaboration with BAE Systems. The project will develop maintenance optimisation modelling with the objective of supporting and informing engineering capability investment. The student will have the opportunity to work with staff and students in Southampton Business School, CORMSIS and SMMI at the University of Southampton drawing on their expertise in mathematical modelling, knowledge and systems management and maritime engineering. There will be an opportunity to spend time at BAE Systems’ sites in Portsmouth Naval Base to collect data and develop a greater understanding of the company’s maritime activities.
With highly complex naval ships having a lifespan in excess of 25 years, the through-life cost of maintaining a modern fleet represents a substantial burden on the customer future budget allocation. Maintenance optimisation and the ability to feed experience back in to the design management loop are imperative in ensuring the competitiveness and future enhancement of the Fleet Service business. The research will address the development of analytical tools and mathematical models to optimise maintenance and hence availability of a ship.
How to apply:
Applicants should have (or expect to obtain) the equivalent of a UK first class or upper second class honours degree (and preferably a master’s degree) in mathematics, engineering or other relevant discipline. The studentship provides a maintenance grant (at the Research Council UK rate) and tuition fees at the UK/EU rate. Applicants must satisfy the eligibility and residence requirements of the UK Research Councils. Owing to funding restrictions imposed by the sponsor, non-EU citizens cannot be considered.
