Donard de Cogan, Preparing to lay a transatlantic telegraph cable; an historical comparison
Lecture at IET Savoy Place, 16 June 2016
About this event
As part of the 150th anniversary events celebrating completion of the first durable transatlantic telegraph cable in 1866, the speaker
is presenting a series of talks on the great enterprise and its aftermath. In March the Norwich Engineering Society heard about the people who reported these historic events, using material from the IET Archives. In April the IET Irish Network heard about
the Irish dimension.
The lecture in Savoy Place on 16th June will trace the various expeditions (1857, 1858, 1865 and 1866). It will discuss the lesson
learnt from the early disasters and near disasters, and will consider the techniques used for testing the cables both during manufacture and submersion ; all part of a learning exercise that ensured ultimate success in the summer of 1866.
There will be a small exhibition on display in the lecture room of artefacts relating to the lecture. This event is free to attend,
but you are asked to pre-register as space is limited.
