Wednesday, May 18th, 4pm: Digital storytelling: exploring patient and family experience of hospitals and medical treatment

Rm 0.05, Bute Building, Cardiff School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies, Cardiff University

Dr Jenny Kidd, Lisa Heledd Jones and Professor Jenny Kitzinger

This seminar explores how digital stories can help ‘give voice’ to patient and family experience in health care contexts – seeing institutions and practices through different eyes, supporting patient-centred care and bringing research into dialogue with practice.

Bios: Dr Jenny Kidd (author of ‘Challenging History in the Museum’) will introduce the session with an overview of how digital stories are being used to change our relationship with institutions. Lisa Heledd Jones (Director of Storyworks UK, http://www.storyworksuk.com/) will discuss how such stories can bring a different perspective to the landscape of hospitals wards and patient experience. Professor Jenny Kitzinger (who co-produced the online healthtalk.org resource,
http://www.healthtalk.org/peoples-experiences/nerves-brain/family-experiences-vegetative-and-minimally-conscious-states/overview
for families of coma patients) will talk about working with artists and storytellers in 'translating'  healthcare research and will present her own digital story about catastrophic brain injury. The formal session runs from 4pm to 5.30pm, with the opportunity for informal discussion continuing afterwards.

A wine reception will follow this event.

Thursday, May 19th, 9 am-7 pm: Digital Media, Journalism and Factual Storytelling Symposium

Bute Building, Cardiff School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies, Cardiff University

This symposium, open to the public, will share cutting-edge research and practice, focused on how rapid transformations in digital media have changed journalistic storytelling practices, creating new opportunities and challenges.

The advent of social media, citizen journalism and user-generated content, alongside new platforms such as live blogs, as well as new presentational and investigative techniques associated with data journalism and the use of algorithms have ushered in new opportunities for sharing information and telling stories. At the same time, these processes are also challenging journalistic practices and professional identities.

The symposium features talks by leading Cardiff University scholars and practitioners, as well as international experts. The opening keynote speaker will be Jay Rosen of New York University, a leading writer on journalism in the digital age (http://journalism.nyu.edu/about-us/profile/jay-rosen). The symposium closes with a talk and screening from Daniel Meadows (http://www.photobus.co.uk), a pioneer of the digital storytelling movement. Other speakers include Bolette Blaagaard (University of Aalborg), Irene Costera Meijer (Free University of Amsterdam), Matt Carlson (St Louis University), Steen Steensen (Oslo and Akershus University College of Applied Sciences), Neil Thurman (Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich), as well as Stuart Allan, Simon Cottle, Karin Wahl-Jorgensen, and Andy Williams of Cardiff University.
