Are there any guidelines out there for best practise with regard to embedding metadata? What is the best standard to use, what minimum fields etc?
James,

IPTC [1] has recently added some cultural heritage-oriented data
fields. There is a toolkit to help import data into this framework [2]
(which I haven't tried, but which is more recent than the discussion on
this topic last June).
