This year’s Institutional Web Management Workshop, IWMW 2016, will be held at Liverpool John Moores University on 21-23 June.  This year’s event will be special as it is the 20th in the series.  To celebrate the longevity of the event and the community a blog has been set up to look back at the history of the event, the ideas discussed and the development of the community.

Both the event and the blog have aspects of relevance to those working in libraries and  other knowledge organisations.

IWMW 2016

Details of the plenary talks at the event are listed at:

http://iwmw.org/iwmw2016/talks/

The main event theme of Understanding Users; Managing Change and Delivering Services are very relevant to those working in libraries, especially those with an interest in digital aspects of library work. Relevant talks include “Skin Deep: Using Cosmetic Improvement to Drive Real Change”; “Managing Change: Leading Horses to Water”; “Establishing Digital at the Heart of the University”; “Building a digital team (almost) from scratch” and “Prototyping the Digital University”.

The session on “Beyond the Institution” features speakers from beyond UK universities. Talks on “Working With External Partners” and “Right Here; Right Now: Providing the Information your Students Need and your Regulator Requires” should be of particular interest although, hopefully, the talk on “When your website is a ‘national embarrassment’ the only way is up” will not be of direct relevance!

The IWMW 2016 master classes last for 2.5 hours and will provide opportunities for participants to explore areas of particular interest in more depth. Master classes which may be of interest to librarians include “Corporate Use of Social Media”; “Planning Digital Transformation for Old Skool Universities” and “Digital Governance: Tools and Practices for Managing the Content Chaos”.

A number of workshop sessions, lasting for 90 minutes, provide further opportunities to explore a range of additional topics such as “Digital Fire Fighting”; “Leadership 101”; “10 years of a Web Team of One: the Lessons Learnt”; “Design a Content Strategy to Optimise Engagement With International Users” and “Debunking the Myths of WordPress & External Hosting”.

The 3-day event costs £275, which includes the conference dinner at the Merseyside Maritime Museum. Online bookings is available at http://iwmw.org/iwmw2016/register/

IWMW Blog

Over the past 20 years we have seen tremendous changes in the ways in which the online environment has transformed research, teaching and learning and other aspects of university life. The IWMW event, which was launched in 1997, has provided opportunities for those with responsibilities for managing institutional web services and other digital channels to share best practices and learn from one’s peers and others.

The IWMW blog, available at http://iwmw.org/blog/ was launched recently to provide a forum for those who work in this area to look back and reflect on the development of the online environment over this sustained period.  Two posts are of particular relevance to the library sector:

In “The Portal is Dead. Long Live the Portal” - http://iwmw.org/blog/2016/03/16/guest-post-portal-dead-long-live-portal/ Tracey Stanley looks back to a panel session she took part in at IWMW 2002 on institutional portals.

Yesterday in a post on “IWMW: Scaling Learning and Innovation to Build a Successful Community” - http://iwmw.org/blog/2016/05/23/iwmw-scaling-learning-and-innovation/ looks at the background to the establishment of the IWMW event.

If you have attended an IWMW event in the past and would like to contribute to the blog, please get in touch

Thanks
