Hi Neil, all

This looks really useful, thanks.

Your principles for OA repositories look really useful for another task that I had in mind.

Following some chat on the OKFN’s Open Science mailing list sparked by an OpenAIRE blog post about the SSRN sell-off (https://blogs.openaire.eu/?p=933), I proposed a few actions:

1.     That we come up with some formal list of “hallmarks of trust” for repositories/community platforms. My idea is that if we come up with a more comprehensive list then we could publish it and ask users and others recommending such services (like librarians) to sign up. This would be a good way of furthering awareness of this issue.

2.      Audit key community scholarly infrastructures to see how they match up to these “hallmarks” (we might be surprised).

3.      Linked to this, but perhaps a separate task, would be to more closely discuss – perhaps with a view towards writing a paper? – open governance and sustainability models for repositories/community platforms (including legal locks, but also alternative models like “platform cooperativism”).

If you or anyone else on this list would be interested in working on these questions together, please respond either via the list or directly. It’d be great to hear from you!

With best wishes, Tony

Betreff: what is a repository? And other updates

Colleagues,

You might be interested in my return to the question of what is a repository, in the context of OA policies: https://scholarlycommunications.jiscinvolve.org/wp/2016/05/31/what-is-a-repository/ - intended to see whether we do have a consensus on that.

Perhaps mainly of UK interest -> other updates on the Jisc scholarly communications blog in the last month include a summary of the work of the European PASTEUR4OA project, a quick landscape sketch of UK and European groups looking at OA, news of new publishers joining Jisc Publications Router, confirmation that Jisc Monitor Local, Monitor UK and Publications Router are moving to service, information about a new controlled vocabulary for resource types, an overview of progress on all Jisc OA projects and services, and an outline of progress on the list of things publishers might do to help with the implementation of OA.

Best wishes

Neil
