Subject: [I-S] Question re Giunti publishers in Florence

italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies

Cari colleghi, Can anyone tell me whether "Giunti" (or "Giunta") is an
old Florentine family name?

I had the idea that, rather than being the name of a family, it might
be the name of an organization ("Giunti"<"giungere" or even
"raggiungere"). Certainly, many aspects of the printer's activities
seem somewhat "corporate," in the modern sense of the word: a huge
output, over many types of literature; many "best-sellers," often
printed years after the initial appearance of the work; "branch"
offices in several cities (i.e. Venice, Lyon), etc.

Would someone also be able to recommend to me a good history of the
Giunti publishers, in English, Italian, or French?

Thanks a lot.

Sincerely,
Jim Ward
New York
