Dear All

As part of London Museum Development Team's Skills Plus Training Programme, we are offering two free train-the-trainer opportunities for museum staff to develop skills and confidence in delivering training sessions to their staff and volunteers:

Train the Trainer: Guiding your Volunteers through Child Protection & Safeguarding Policies and Procedures

Museum of London, London Wall

Tuesday 14 June, 10am – 2pm

Volunteers are often concerned about interacting with children. The MDO team have recently reviewed the Volunteer Training Bank and have updated the Child Protection Training resources. This revised training has been developed for museum staff to reassure volunteers and give them guidance on working safely with children and young people. The course will give you the confidence to deliver this course to your volunteers, and give them:

·         An understanding of the meaning of child protection and forms of abuse

·         A broad understanding of the legal position of museums and the need for formal recruitment, screening and child protection procedures

·         Practical knowledge of basic principles of safer work around children and young people

·         Increased confidence and skills to deal with difficult situations

Please note that this is not intended to be a professional safeguarding course; it is a guide to passing on good practice information to volunteers to ensure that they understand their responsibilities.

A full course outline is available on the website and you can book a place by completing a booking form.

Train the Trainer: Creating Tours for Family Audiences

Museum of London, London Wall

Tuesday 19 July, 10.30am – 4.30pm

This course is designed to equip supervisors and junior managers with the skills to plan and design their own training sessions for staff and volunteers. The train the trainer session will give staff the confidence to train colleagues to run tours for family audiences. Delivered by Blue Badge guide and trainer Julie Chandler, who has devised the new resources currently on the volunteer training bank, will be running this one day course on presentation skills, planning for training and how to use the resources already established on the Volunteer Training Bank.

A full course outline is available on the website and you can book a place by completing a booking form.

The London Museum Development Team has also awarded the London Heritage Volunteer Managers Network (LMHVM) an In-House Skills Plus Training Grant to provide training for Volunteer Managers on measuring the impact of volunteers:

Measuring Volunteering

Museum of London, Docklands

Tuesday 21 June, 1.00pm – 4.00pm

This workshop explores the development of methods for measuring the contribution volunteers make to an organisation and society. The session will be run by Rob Jackson and will explore how those methods work, their pros and cons, why Volunteer Managers should measure volunteering and how to use the data you produce. The workshop will be held at the Museum of London Docklands and you can book a place by completing a booking form.

Please note that when courses are oversubscribed, places are allocated in the following way:

·         To those who are able to clearly demonstrate in their application how this training will benefit their organisation

·         Staff/volunteers from non-national London museums

·         Staff/volunteers from other London museums

·         Participants working in the profession such as freelancers and staff at other heritage organisations and from outside London

Best wishes

Rachael
