Hi Anna et all

You might be interested to know that Katy Bagust-Jones and Tammela Platt are running a working at our National Conference on Saturday 9th July entitled:

' Bridging the gap between ESOL and Functional Skills '

This workshop will explore strategies for helping non-native English speakers progress from ESOL to Functional Skills in order to facilitate their progression into work and further study. It will explore the challenges of moving from ESOL to Functional Skills English and the particular difficulties non-native speakers have when studying for Functional Skills exams. You will have the opportunity to explore activities and resources for supporting ESOL learners in their progression for Functional Skills English and towards work.

I think many teachers in the sector experience the same transition problems and we’re hoping this workshop might help to provide teachers with some specific strategies and activities to help.

Details about the conference are on our website: http://natecla.org.uk/content/621/National-Conference-2016 and tickets for Saturday only start from £75.

Hope this helps!

Thanks

Laura

Subject: ESOL/Functional Skills

Hello

Has anyone got any experience of supporting ESOL students who progress onto Functional Skills?  I'm looking at the problems ESOL learners have at FS Level 1 and Level 2, in particular with the reading and writing components.

Students who successfully complete ESOL L1 and L2 courses are often being asked for FS L2 if they want to go on to mainstream courses at our college and beyond, and are struggling especially with context, word counts and accuracy issues.

I'd be interested to hear if you have similar issues, and would be grateful for any suggestions which might help. Does anyone know of any research in this area?

Thanks very much,

Anna
