Hi Louise,

Archivematica is a digital preservation system. Here at the University of York we are still in the testing and development phase with it but hope to have a production version up and running and integrated into our workflows in the future. We have been working on a Jisc-funded project alongside the University of Hull to see if Archivematica can be used for preserving research data, but the lessons learnt are also applicable in other use cases.

We've written lots about it over the course of the last year but a good place to start is our Archivematica FAQs which we published as a blog post: https://digital-archiving.blogspot.co.uk/2015/07/archivematica-for-research-data-faqs.html

We also have a project web page which includes links to our 2 reports: http://www.york.ac.uk/borthwick/projects/archivematica/

Note that open source software is rarely cost neutral - we haven't used the data migration service (is there one?) or a maintenance contract but of course we then need to pay our own staff to work with the system instead. With open source software it is also good to think about future development of the software - either by developing your own features to share with the community or putting aside some money to pay someone else to develop new features. If all users do this, then the functionality of the software improves over time in line with user needs.

We have also been working with AtoM an open source archival management system.

Do get in touch if you have any further questions,
Cheers,
Jen

Dear members (with apologies for cross-posting),

If it's not too much trouble, I'd be interested to know whether anyone has any experience of open-source management software, such as Archivematica https://www.archivematica.org/en/ .

Is it any good? Is it actually free (or nearly) in practice (without using their data migration service, or subscribing to a maintenance contract - which I realise is probably not feasible) and if not, how much does it cost? Any insight gratefully received.

With kind regards,

Louise
