Thanks Ben - those snippets are very suggestive:

"When I asked a clerk whether he had any old Warwickshire deeds he said, ‘I believe there is some lampshade stuff”. I rescued a bundle: the remark was sinister."

The response to my query has been generous and helpful and I’m just back writing to everyone with thanks but this is general note of appreciation to users of this list.

Anthony Wood, former County Archivist at the Warwickshire County Record Office, kept a diary between 1950 and 1955. They're held at the record office under catalogue number CR2465.

Our community website Our Warwickshire has published a little snippet of his diaries, available here:

Colleagues,

I hope you’ll be willing to lend me your expertise in response to this request.

I wonder whether you would be willing to recommend a memoir or biography of any particular archivists?

These might be officially or self-published  - perhaps unpublished and held in an archive.

The context for this work is a current piece of research I am producing on affective attachments to archives. While it is not uncommon to come across the professional rationale for archiving and the dedication of the archivist for instance, but I am interested in particular in instances where individuals might express a more passionate attachment to the archival enterprise.

By way of comparison, in work I’ve published recently on community archives organised around popular music cultures it is not uncommon to find statements about such activity stating that it is the result of a ‘labour of love’. The same ethos is in part expressed in Andy Green’s recent poetic paen to archival work ‘These Notes are out of Order’ (http://www.shoestring-press.com/2015/09/these-notes-are-out-of-order/).

Any advice is grateful received.
