Alternatively another route to a publically available really short abbreviated but recognisable name, URLs can be used by clipping
the bit between "www.” and “.ac.uk”. They can be found alongside UKPRN and other data on the HEFCE Provider Register XML schema.

Hi,
HEIDI / HEIDI Plus have appropriate Provider Names - comprising, Learner Provider Number, Provider Short Names & Provider Full Names..
Someone at you institution with access to these should be able to pull off list with all the names?

Subject: HEP Short names and metadata
Hi all,
I'm trying to get hold of a list of 'short names' for UK HEPs e.g. 'Cardiff' in place of Cardiff University, 'QMUL' in place of Queen Mary University of London etc. As you'll
be aware, the long names of providers are unwieldy when used in charts and tables. If anyone has a home-made list of short names against other metadata, with institutions as rows that would be appreciated.
Ideally, a csv/txt/excel file with rows as follows will be great:
UK Provider Reference Number (UKRPN); usual HESA long name; short name; UK country; mission group(s)
The last two categories are 'nice to haves'.
Best regards,
John
