Hi Kerry
Out of curiosity, when you used to do things the way Phil did, were all staff trained to perform both ketone and glucose testing?
Best wishes
Michelle

Hi Michelle,
With the help of our diabetes specialist nurses, we’ve recently rolled out ketone testing, using the FreeStyle Precison Pro meter, to more clinical areas including the majority of inpatient areas. In areas other
than the Emergency Department and Medical Admissions Units, we’ve limited this to one meter per area with the meter and workstation clearly labelled as ‘Glucose & Ketones’. Where urine is obtainable, our Trust ketone testing policy is to test urine ketones
primarily unless there is a clear deterioration in patient condition, or concerns that patient is particularly high risk (i.e. Type 1 patients).
Before this, like Phil, we either temporarily enabled ketone testing on a meter on a ward, they borrowed one from a ward that did have one or we loaned them one of our spares on a short term basis.
I’ve attached a copy of the presentation that we (Lead DSN & I) put together prior to extending ketone testing. We now train everyone for both glucose and ketone testing as they’re more than likely to come across
it at some point.
Hope this helps - even a little bit.
Kind regards,
Kerry

Hi All
I was wondering what procedures/policies other Trusts have in place for blood ketone testing in wards that do not have designated ketone meters.
Best wishes
Michelle
