We used to do this assay for various tests in Oxford, but the gastroenterologists eventually decided they had little or no value and we stopped. Very few were ever done for overgrowth.

Probiotics (pill form) - no need to avoid in general but do not take in the 14 hours prior to the test
Antacids - may affect pH all the way to the colon as well as gastric pH, so avoid  for 14 hours beforehand
Proton pump inhibitors - as above
Insulin administration - no need to avoid
Glucose tablet (diabetic with low blood sugar) - the subject should be truly fasting (water only for 14 hours) before the start of the test, so I think that would rule out most diabetics
Avoid high fiber/complex carbs ?spaghettin and does a list of specific foods to avoid - the point is to avoid eating high fibre or slow-digesting foods prior to the test (bran, coarse breads, nuts, beans etc) for a period of time (e.g. 48 hours) before the 14 hour fast
No sleeping or vigourous exercise (running to catch the appointment) before the test and NO SMOKing (all affect GI motility)

We have had some questions lately about whether or not these need to be avoided or not prior to H –Breath testing and would like to hear some thoughts!

Yes, I do it, using a dose of lactulose. Surprisingly enough, hydrogen and methane in breath are quite stable if collected properly so it can be arranged postally.

Do any labs offer hydrogen breath testing to detect GI bacterial overgrowth?
