Thank you all for your advice and the papers. This helps a lot! @Purva: is it possible that you send me an example of you coding that makes clear how you went from separate C's, M's and O's to C-M-O-configurations? Thanks in advance. The whole process, starting with data collection and flowing through to your analysis, is about thinking in terms of CMO configurations. This should be both the focus of your data collection and your analysis. Ana Manzano makes this point very clearly in her excellent paper, the craft of interviewing in realist evaluation, which has just been published in Evaluation (online first). http://evi.sagepub.com/content/early/2016/04/01/1356389016638615.full.pdf+html Good luck with the PhD Marleen! So we have written up our experience of how we tackled it (in the attached paper). I also had another paper on coding CMOs which I thought provided an alternative approach. We used a realist evaluation approach to design our study. At the moment we are analyzing our data (mainly interview data) according to the C-M-O framework we developed based on a literature study and focus group interviews performed before the case study. However, we have noticed that it is a bit artificial to divide the codes into C-M-O. Sometimes one sentence says something about the C, the M and the O. We think that after this initial coding phase we need to go through the data again to code the C-M-O configurations, and not separate C's, M's and O's. Is this a right way to code the data or what would be your advice in this case? Thanks in advance for your advice.
