Who is it for?
This interactive workshop is aimed anyone who wants to communicate science more effectively to the public. This includes researchers, people working in public engagement and outreach, other bioscience
professionals and students.
What does the course cover?
Session 1: What is public engagement and why should we do it?
This interactive session will explore why it is so important to be able to communicate clearly about our work - both for us, as scientists, and for the public themselves. We will also look at what
opportunities exist to engage with the general public.
Session 2: The importance of body language
Participants will get the opportunity to work on their own body language skills and observe those skills that work in others.
Session 3: Preparing your content & getting your message clear, using lessons from traditional story-telling
Participants will have the opportunity to practice communicating scientific ideas clearly - minimising the use of jargon and maximising opportunities to use imagery, examples, metaphors and analogies
- and try out techniques that can be used to generate new content from scratch.
Session 4: Communication skills masterclass
Participants will have the opportunity to present and get feedback on a piece of material created earlier in the workshop, or a short pre-prepared talk, pitch, presentation or lecture - incorporating
presentation skills learnt in other sessions.
Places are limited and are offered on a first come, first served basis. Lunch and refreshments are included.
