medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture Hi Meg,

David Freedberg’s Power of Images and Hans Belting’s Likeness and Presence are the best starting points in my view. Their bibliography would help you further.

And the 13th century theologian William Durand has a section on the use of images in the churches in the first volume of his Rationale Divinorum Officiorum (Corpus Chr., CXL). It is also translated into English by Thibodeau.

Hope this helps,

Best wishes,

nesli

Nothing wrong with it! It just happens at the wrong time for my article! However, if  anyone knows of  defenses of the use of images in churches in the late medieval / Early modern periods, especially if based on the idea that they can increase our piety or our   knowledge & understanding of the divine,  I'd love to know about it. Preferably from the 12th c. or later.

What's wrong with the iconoclast controversy? Sorry, since that's my thing, I'm just a little hurt ...

Illustribus,
I would strongly recommend Stuart Clark's /Vanities of the Eye/.

It is early modern in focus, but it has enough background to be useful and so of the debates he examines from a 16th C. context are relevant earlier.

Best,

Richard

medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Greetings all,
Ím wondering whether any of you can give me a lead on where to find out about the relative importance of vision (as opposed to hearing) as a  means of gaining knowledge? I dońt want to get into the iconoclast controversy, but Ím  wondering what philosophers and/or theologians had to say about this in the 12th century or later. Can anyone point me to some bibliography?
Thanks,
Meg
